So many 'close encounters' have come of late from this serene Utah canyon, commonly known as the site where Brigham Young declared "This is the place," that extraterrestrials must be saying exactly the same thing. One of the newest hot spots in the state, UFO sightings in this area have come rapidly in the last two years. In February 2001, on Little Mountain, a bright, fast and low-flying object was seen moving up the canyon from the south. Blue and white in color, it was said to make no sound and was seen by two separate witnesses. In July of 2002, a strange animal sound was heard and recorded by an alien enthusiast. Big Mountain seems to be the most prolific spot to view UFOs, where one was spotted with a bright, streaking white light in 2001. While many of the sightings go unreported, they've been rumored to be among some of the most vivid in the state. Deer abductions, strange sounds, UFO landing pads and witches and ghosts are all rumored to make their home in this scenic canyon, just east of downtown Salt Lake.

From a canyon resident,
Living in the canyon for three years now, I have heard many unusuall sounds. From loud metalic humming to strange animal sounds. These strange sounds happen often and sometimes make the hair on the back of my neckstand up.
Just recently in the early morning hours, "something was on my roof, making a clicking sound moving back and forth, then making a loud bumps which startled me, The cats wouldn't come out from under the bed till daylight. This continued for around a half an hour.
Before that, again in the morning hours, a loud, weird bird like sound was heard moving up and down the canyon, dogs were going nuts! barking wildly. The sound moved into different parts of the canyon, as if whatever it was, was traveling up and down the canyon. as it did, the dogs in that area would start barking. I went out to investigate but found nothing. The sound lasted for about 20 minutes.

A classic UFO sighting from within the Canyon:
Businessman Paul Pedersen agreed to speak publicly for the first time about an event he says occurred in 1964. As Pedersen was leaving a neighbour's Emigration Canyon home early one morning, he noticed a huge oval-shaped craft in the sky above him
"It drifted over and down and then hovered above the driveway,"
Pedersen said. "As it stood still, people inside came to the portholes and looked out at me. That kind of unnerved me because it was so dark I knew I couldn't be seen by human eyes. . . . They looked just like people. They were silhouetted against this green light in the background."
Pedersen then received a telepathic message from the beings.
They asked if he'd like to come with them.
"It was one individual's voice," he said. "I didn't say anything but answered by thinking. My thought was that I can't leave, I have a wife and two children who depend on me. Their response was, 'That's OK,' and the craft just hovered up above the trees
and went over the mountain behind me."
